Veneers Q&A
Are Dental Veneers the right solution?
People get veneers to improve the appearance of their smiles. Veneers can be used to fix damage from discoloration or teeth misshapen from being worn down, chipped, or broken. Veneers are also used to correct misaligned, irregular or uneven teeth, or to close gaps between teeth. Veneers have a number of advantages including a natural appearance, they easily tolerated by gums. Porcelain is stain resistant, and in fact less invasive approach to changing the appearance of a tooth.
What is the procedure for installing Veneers?
Veneer installation usually requires three visits for consultation, preparation and installation. During the first visit, Dr. Minami will discuss the desired changes and results. He will examine the patient’s teeth to make sure that dental veneers will be the right solution and outline the process in detail. X-rays may be needed and impressions of the patient’s teeth may be made. In the second visit, the patient’s teeth will be prepared for installation. About a half millimeter of enamel will be removed from the surface of the teeth. A local anesthetic may be used for this part of the process. An impression of the teeth will be taken to be sent to a laboratory for the veneers to be made. Temporary veneers may be placed for the week or two necessary for the permanent veneers to be made. In the final appointment, the new veneers will be fitted to the patient’s teeth. Dr. Minami may repeatedly place, remove and trim the veneer to ensure the correct fit. Before the veneer is permanently cemented on to the teeth, they will be thoroughly cleaned, polished and etched, which makes the teeth more receptive to the cement. Once the veneers are set, any excess cement will be removed, the fit and bite will be examined, and any final adjustments being made. Dr. Minami may request a follow up visit to check up on your veneers.
